Tax

Many say that we will not be serious about global warming until we institute a carbon tax on emissions of this greenhouse gas.  The real problem is that carbon pollution is an ‘externalized cost’ of doing business.  That is, it can be ignored by businesses and consumers, so it IS ignored.  This used to be the case with many much more potent toxins, and so companies would dump them on the ground ‘out back’ rather than undertaking the expense of proper ‘safe’ disposal (the emphasis is there since there is really no ‘safe’ disposal for a toxin, just relatively ‘safer’ disposal… if it ain’t good for life, don’t make it in the first place).

So we need to take the extraordinary path of asking for a tax to be implemented on carbon dioxide emissions.  Now when did people ever want to ask to be taxed!  But now we do.  Our leadership does not have the guts to institute the radical measures that are required to reverse the life-threatening changes that global warming poses to humanity.  So write and call your governmental representatives and ask for them to support a tax on CO2 emissions by businesses.  This form of the tax will percolate through the economy internalizing the cost of this climate-threatening pollution source, effectively curbing our appetite over time for the source of the threat, wasteful use of fossil fuels.
