Simple Things

Here are some simple things, the ‘low hanging fruit, which you can do to help counter global warming.  Please email us your suggestions of other simple things to add to this list.

  • Replace your old incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs).  The energy savings is quite significant for such a simple action.  The savings from switching out 50 old bulbs for new CFLs is said to be the equivalent of taking on car off the road!
  • Unplug all electronic devices when not in use, or connect them to a power strip that can be switched off.  Many, if not most electronic devices have ‘convenience’ features that keep them powered on in a ‘sleep state’ for quick use.  The EPA estimates that 45 billion kilowatt hours of electricity per year, nearly 5% of total residential use, at an estimated $35 billion annually, is wasted in this manner.  That is one heck of a lot of CO2… and all for ‘convenience’.
  • Put your chargers into a power strip.  Many people do not realize that chargers continue to draw energy (and put more greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere) even when the device they are meant to charge is not connected.  Buy the kind of power strip that has a light to tell you when it is on or off, otherwise you may end up leaving things on anyhow!
