In writing this page, we honor all the mothers and fathers who’ve ever said to their children, “Don’t stand there with the refrigerator door open.  Do you think money grows on trees?”

It’s true.  Holding the refrigerator or freezer door open is a big waste of energy.  Cold dry air flows out and is replaced by warm, moist air, which takes many BTUs of energy to cool back down to the temperature required.

So think of what you want, if possible, before you open the refrigerator.  Or if you’re not sure, open it, look what’s in there, then close the door while you consider your options.  Saving ourselves from global warming is about creating new habits. Here’s one that would also make your parents happy.
