Power Strips

There are many types and brands of power strips on the market.  They vary in the number of receptacles, the length of their power chords, whether or not they can be switched on and off.  They are inexpensive and a great way to reduce the energy waste built into our electronic devices, most of which still consume power when in the ‘off’ position. Plug them into strategic power receptacles around your house where most of your electronics are located, and use them to really turn things off.

Some power strips have one or more positions wired in the ‘constant on’ position for devices which should not be switched off, like the base unit of a cordless phone or an answering machine.  Match the kind of power switches you buy to the particular use you need them for.

It’s best to buy the power strips which have a small LED light in the switch indicating when the strip is on and off.  This will prevent the power strips being left on accidentally between uses, which defeats the whole idea.

Form the habit of checking the switches when you pass by them.  Turn them off even if someone else in the house left them on.  We each need to cover one anothers’ forgetfulness when it comes to preventing the climate crisis.
